I have the honor of chairing the American Hospital Association’s Foster G. McGaw Prize Committee. Each year, we recognize a hospital that truly connects with its community to promote health and well-being.
Last fall, our team traveled across the country to visit the four finalists. It was inspiring to see how hospitals are rising to challenges. One hospital created an adaptive sports program, allowing children with physical impairments to experience activities like skiing and rock climbing. Another launched a program for teenagers to gain hands-on clinical experience. They met staff, observed surgeries, and developed skills for future healthcare careers.
One finalist focused on improving the community’s outdoor spaces, engaging local children in designing a beautiful playground. Another trained medical students to act as navigators, helping food-insecure patients access resources for healthier lives.
James Hereford, CEO of Fairview Health Services, the 2025 Foster G. McGaw Prize winner, highlighted hospitals’ critical role during difficult times. He said, “Health care systems have a responsibility in moments like this. To be a source of stability when things feel unsettled.”
Mark Boom, CEO of Houston Methodist, sees the challenge of affordability as an opportunity. He’s leading initiatives to improve health outcomes for the community. Meanwhile, Christine Schuster, CEO of Emerson Health, emphasizes building lasting relationships by being present in the community.
Eric Dickson, CEO of UMass Memorial Health, has been leading efforts to pursue an anchor mission, dedicating resources to community improvement.
Despite the growing challenges in healthcare, these innovative hospitals continue to commit to making society better.
