Transforming Lives: Belfast Soup Kitchen Unveils Plans for a New Health Care Hub

The Belfast Soup Kitchen is gearing up to launch a community health hub this June. This new initiative aims to boost local access to healthcare and provide more than just meals.

“This project is about integrating health into our services,” said Cherie Merrill, the soup kitchen’s executive director. It reflects a growing trend in anti-hunger organizations across the country that are expanding their reach to tackle poverty and health issues. Many are now offering support like transportation, job training, and social activities alongside food.

The health hub plans to provide services such as blood pressure checks, diabetes management, and even visits from a mobile maternal health clinic. Merrill is collaborating with the Penobscot Community Health Center and MaineHealth to broaden healthcare services available at the hub.

“We want to remove barriers to healthcare, especially as costs rise,” Merrill added. The hub will also enhance the soup kitchen’s “food is medicine” program, which addresses chronic illnesses through nutrition.

Recently, the kitchen opened a bigger food pantry called the Kindness Community Market and operates mini-pantries at several MaineHealth locations. At the health hub, healthcare providers can prescribe fresh produce, allowing clients to pick up their groceries directly from the pantry.

Debby Heath, a community paramedic, will hold regular hours at the hub. She will monitor health, check medications, and connect people to vital resources—everything from hearing aids for the elderly to substance abuse programs.

“It’s about keeping people healthy and safe,” Heath said, highlighting the challenges many residents face. Many live in tough situations, and a consistent presence at the soup kitchen allows her to help manage chronic conditions effectively.

Last year, the Belfast Soup Kitchen served over 20% of Waldo County residents through various anti-hunger programs, including meal deliveries and food distributions. Merrill noted that many clients struggle to choose between food and medicine.

“Access to healthy food significantly impacts their health and longevity,” Heath remarked, emphasizing the connection between nutrition and disease management.

The Belfast Soup Kitchen’s new hub is not only a response to immediate needs but also a proactive step toward a healthier, more supportive community.
