Detroit’s Redford Brightmoor Initiative is making a real difference in the community. Located in two areas, Redford and Brightmoor, it offers essential services like free food, clothing, and even auto repairs.
Shalonda Davis is one of many who have benefitted from their car care program. A year ago, she noticed a grinding noise from her vehicle. Unsure what to do, she discovered the initiative’s program, which allowed her to get her brakes and rotors fixed. She only had to cover the cost of parts. “The labor is free, and that means everything to me,” Davis said.
Every Saturday morning, volunteers assess and repair cars on a first-come, first-served basis. Lead mechanic Jay Mellis explained that they usually handle around six assessments and three to five repairs each week. “We save residents a lot of money,” he noted. For instance, repairs that may cost $5,000 at a shop could be completed for under $300 through the initiative.
The program doesn’t stop at car repairs. The Redford Brightmoor Initiative hosts family events and offers free stores stocked with essential items. Hilary Kristal, the director, mentioned they serve between 50 to 100 families every Saturday. “Clients leave feeling relieved,” she shared. The organization aims to create a welcoming environment that feels like a community center.
This growing need for services reflects a broader trend. According to a recent report from the U.S. Census Bureau, nearly 1 in 3 Americans struggle to afford basic needs.
