Director Melanie Wolfe highlights a growing need: “More than 24,000 people in our county experience food insecurity—about one in nine. Community support is vital; the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank helps with regular deliveries, but donations are always needed. “When we get food donations, it’s gone quickly. We’re back to square one before we know it,” Wolfe acknowledges. Local initiatives, like “stuff-a-truck” drives, bolster their efforts, but the demand continues to grow.
In the wake of rising costs of living and inflation, the food pantry is more relevant than ever. A recent survey found that 43% of Americans faced some form of food insecurity in the past year, underscoring the urgency of the situation. Seasonal support, especially during the holidays, is crucial for maintaining services throughout the year.
