Transforming Lives: Insights from IPB University Students on Their 30-Day Eco Journey to a Sustainable Lifestyle

Big changes often start with small actions, and that’s the heart of the Sustainable Solution Champions (SSC) initiative. One key part of this initiative is Eco Journey, which invites students to practice sustainable living for 30 days through simple, impactful actions.

Dr. Rina Mardiana, a leader of this initiative, shares, “We aim to build collective strength through IPB’s vision of harmony with each other, nature, and the Creator. Real change starts with individual actions rooted in strong values.”

According to Dr. Rina, the program has two phases. The first focuses on developing a character that embraces sustainability. The second phase involves turning this awareness into lasting habits. Over a month, participants focused on four main actions: Anti-Food Waste, Planet-X, EcoWalk, and BioDiscovery. These initiatives invite simple changes that greatly benefit the environment. Daily reflective journaling helped participants become more self-aware and assess their growth.

Nasywa Aulia Artha, a participant, shared how the Anti-Food Waste action changed her perspective. “After journaling, I realized I wasted about one and a half kilograms of food over 30 days. I learned to manage my consumption better. My group even created compost from our cafeteria’s food scraps,” she explained.

Another participant, Wafa, mentioned how the experience fostered gratitude. “I learned to take only what I need and turn near-expired ingredients into new meals. It’s more than just reducing waste; it’s about respecting our natural resources,” she noted.

Participants didn’t just aim for short-term results. They were encouraged to foster these sustainable habits beyond the program. Dr. Rina emphasized, “This evaluation isn’t about passing or failing. It’s about honesty with ourselves and our commitment to sustainable living.”

Statistics support this initiative’s effectiveness. A recent survey found that 78% of students involved in similar programs reported a greater awareness of their environmental impact and intention to adopt sustainable practices long-term. This reflects a growing trend among younger generations towards eco-conscious decision-making.

In a world increasingly affected by climate change, programs like SSC play a vital role in shaping responsible citizens. As interest in sustainability rises, each small action contributes to a larger movement for a more sustainable future.

Overall, the Sustainable Solution Champions initiative is more than a program. It’s a step toward building a community of mindful individuals who are committed to caring for our planet.
