Transforming Lives: Wawa Foundation Invests in Community by Granting Support to Harry Chapin Food Bank

Harry Chapin Food Bank has recently received a $15,000 grant from the Wawa Foundation’s “Fly Beyond” initiative. This funding aims to help combat hunger and food insecurity, particularly among young people in Southwest Florida.

In 2023, the Fly Beyond program was introduced by Wawa to tackle local hunger issues. It provides grants to food banks that focus on improving access to fresh and healthy meals for children. Harry Chapin Food Bank, as the largest hunger-relief organization in the region, plays a crucial role in this effort.

Richard LeBer, the president and CEO of Harry Chapin Food Bank, highlighted the pressing need in the community. “More than 65% of public school students qualify for free or reduced-price meals based on their family’s income. This need is growing,” he said. The Fly Beyond grant specifically targets youth, ensuring that all children have access to nutritious food as they develop.

Based on criteria such as community impact and program reach, Harry Chapin Food Bank was selected for the Fly Beyond grant. The organization supports around 250,000 people each month with the help of over 175 partner agencies.

Liz Simeone, president of The Wawa Foundation, expressed pride in the grant program’s impact. “This year, we’re honored to support 33 food banks, including Harry Chapin, in the fight against food insecurity,” she stated. The focus is on helping young people build healthy habits through regular access to nutritious meals and snacks.

Historically, food banks have played a crucial role in assisting communities facing food shortages. According to Feeding America, food insecurity affects over 38 million Americans, showing the ongoing demand for organizations like Harry Chapin. In 2024 alone, the bank distributed approximately 39.5 million pounds of food, equating to around 32 million meals across five counties.
