Sutter Health and Santa Clara University are launching the Mark & Mary Stevens School of Medicine, California’s first new medical school in over a century. This groundbreaking initiative is backed by a generous $175 million donation from Mary (Mathews) Stevens, a Santa Clara alumna, and her husband, Mark Stevens, a venture capitalist.
This collaboration aims to rethink medical education by blending healthcare delivery, research, and academic training. The new school will be located next to Sutter’s East Santa Clara Campus in Silicon Valley in an 82,000-square-foot facility that is currently under construction.
The $175 million contribution is notable. It’s the largest cash gift ever made to Catholic higher education and marks a significant achievement for both Santa Clara University and Sutter Health. Remarkably, this is the second year in a row that Sutter Health has received a donation of over $100 million.
The medical school plans to align with Sutter Health’s vision of creating a “learning health system” that intertwines research, education, and patient care. For Santa Clara, this initiative fits within their Impact 2030 strategic plan, which focuses on addressing critical societal needs through strengths in science, technology, and healthcare education.
Unlike many new medical schools that depend on multiple hospitals for training, this school will provide students direct access to Sutter Health’s integrated healthcare network. Currently, Sutter Health runs over 30 residency and fellowship programs, with plans to train around 575 residents and fellows by the end of 2027. This new school aims to help bridge California’s physician shortage.
The curriculum will emphasize new technologies like artificial intelligence and digital health tools. Students will collaborate with Sutter Health’s Innovation Center and other programs at Santa Clara, promoting a hands-on approach to modern healthcare.
As California faces increasing physician shortages, this school prioritizes whole-person care, interdisciplinary collaboration, and real-world clinical experience. The school is currently seeking accreditation and is preparing to welcome its first class.
