Muhammad Siddiqui had a revealing insight: “This was never about technology.” It might seem odd to say this about Reid Health, a hospital in Richmond, Indiana, positioned as a finalist for the 2026 AHA Rural Hospital Excellence in Innovation Award.

Through a collaboration with HelloCare.ai, Reid Health started using Abridge, a generative AI tool designed to document conversations between clinicians and patients. In each patient room, Epic-synced digital whiteboards and virtual nursing technologies have been introduced since 2024. But why isn’t the focus purely on the tech?

Misti Foust-Cofield, the vice president and chief nursing officer, shared why this initiative was necessary. “Our teams were losing the joy and purpose in their work.” Clinicians found themselves spending excessive time on paperwork, often working late into the evening long after their shifts ended. The goal was clear: Implement AI in a way that truly benefits them. Siddiqui emphasized, “AI matters only if it gives time back to people. If not, it’s just noise.”

The results speak for themselves. Thanks to Abridge, clinicians save 10-12 minutes per clinical note. This led to an impressive 86% completion rate for same-day documentation, drastically reducing after-hours work. Providers can now focus more on patients instead of paperwork.

Patient satisfaction has grown significantly. Comments on platforms like Google show appreciation for the technology. “Patients would say, ‘What an amazing tool. I love seeing a small hospital utilizing this,’” Siddiqui noted. The positive effects extend to staff retention as well. Foust-Cofield reported a notable increase in interest from new nursing graduates wanting to shadow at Reid Health. This tech allows staff to prioritize patient care over typing.

“Our community deserves innovation,” Foust-Cofield said. The recognition from the AHA allows the hospital to pause and appreciate its accomplishments amid the continual hustle of healthcare projects.

Beyond recognition, Siddiqui hopes other rural health systems will look to Reid Health as an example. “If they can do it, why can’t we?” he asked. The ambition is to build a playbook for success to share with others.

This approach aligns with recent studies indicating that tech-driven healthcare innovations can significantly boost both patient and provider satisfaction. For example, a study published in the Journal of Medical Internet Research found that hospitals using advanced digital tools reported 20% higher patient satisfaction scores than those that hadn’t embraced such technology. The takeaway? Properly implemented technology is not just about efficiency; it’s about enhancing the human experience in healthcare.
