The Institute for Feed Education and Research (IFEEDER) recently shared its annual update, highlighting its work to create a more sustainable animal feed and pet food industry. Over the past year, IFEEDER teamed up with various industry players to tackle pressing challenges and seize new opportunities.

Lara Moody, the executive director, emphasized the aim of providing useful tools and knowledge for the industry. “We’re expanding our projects each year to better meet the needs of our sector,” she said.

Some key highlights from the update include two comprehensive reports that assess the ingredients found in U.S. pet food and livestock feed. These reports pay special attention to materials that can be repurposed from other sectors. Additionally, improvements in life cycle assessment data were made in collaboration with the Global Feed LCA Institute. On-farm research also explored how to reduce methane emissions in dairy farming through specific feed additives.

IFEEDER is also focusing on building resilience in supply chains, especially for vitamins and amino acids. Furthermore, it is updating nutritional standards for swine and enhancing available data on feed ingredients to lessen environmental impact.

Beyond research, IFEEDER has partnered with the American Feed Industry Association’s Equipment Manufacturing Committee, which successfully raised $23,476 in scholarship funds. These scholarships support students aspiring to enter the feed and grain sciences.
