In a move to enhance public health services, the City of Somerville in Massachusetts has teamed up with Dimagi, a leader in tech solutions for community health. Together, they will implement CommCare, a digital health platform designed to streamline data management for community health workers (CHWs) and public health nurses (PHNs) in Somerville and its nearby cities, Arlington and Medford. This initiative is partly backed by the Massachusetts Department of Health.
The new system aims to cut down on repetitive data entry and ensure that patient consent is secure and current, while also allowing for more effective data analysis. This will help allocate resources wisely and address both ongoing and emerging health needs.
“Our public health team is dedicated, but they need the right tools to be truly effective,” said Kelley Hiland, deputy director of health and human services for Somerville. “Dimagi’s platform will help us protect sensitive health information while improving our operations.”
Using CommCare, Somerville’s health workers will streamline processes like client registration and intake. This will make their workflows faster and allow personalized consent management. The platform also enables tracking of referrals to connect clients with essential services.
Jonathan Jackson, CEO of Dimagi, emphasizes the importance of such tools in today’s health landscape. “Community health resources are crucial for overall public health. With a change in legislation regarding reimbursement for community health services, cities need to ensure they’re collecting accurate data to secure funding,” he explained. “Somerville is taking a proactive stance by adopting the right tools now.”
This collaboration is part of a broader trend where more organizations are integrating digital solutions into public health. For instance, in 2023, Island Health Care, a federally qualified health center, also began utilizing Dimagi’s CommCare to enhance their public health initiatives.
