Transforming Ramadan: How a Dearborn Group is Battling Food Waste with 80 Volunteers from Grandma’s Basement to the Community

In Dearborn, Michigan, families come together during Ramadan to break their fasts, often leaving behind a lot of extra food. For Nadine Daoud, a pharmacist, this excess used to mean waste. In 2017, she founded Helping Handzzz after realizing the potential to help others with this leftover food.

Daoud noticed the large trays of uneaten meals after gatherings at her grandmother’s home. Instead of letting that food go to waste, she decided to package it and share it with those in need. What started as a simple Instagram post asking for food donations turned into a community effort. Now, around 75 to 80 volunteers are involved.

The name “Helping Handzzz” reflects the late-night work of its volunteers. Many deliveries happen after midnight, a nod to the group’s humble beginnings. Residents in Dearborn can message Helping Handzzz to arrange pickups of untouched meals. Volunteers meet at a local Islamic center, where they sort and package meals from their cars.

From 8:30 to 9 p.m., volunteers prepare balanced containers, often including protein, rice, and vegetables, for homeless individuals. Families in need also receive larger trays of food. Any leftovers are taken to the Detroit Rescue Mission to ensure freshness.

Daoud emphasizes, “A hungry person is a hungry person.” The goal is simple: help anyone in need, regardless of background.

Helping Handzzz doesn’t just focus on food after iftar. They also run a “pre-iftar” program where donors can provide meals for families to enjoy. This effort ensures families have a warm meal as they break their fast.

Over the years, Daoud has seen the impact of this work. She remembers supporting a woman who was struggling to find stable housing during Ramadan. By the month’s end, that woman had secured an apartment. “Maybe our meals helped her save some money to get there,” Daoud said.

This year marks Helping Handzzz’s 10th anniversary. They are hosting a fundraising dinner to support their ongoing efforts, including family meal initiatives and community projects.

According to recent statistics, food insecurity continues to be a pressing issue in the U.S., impacting millions. Organizations like Helping Handzzz play an essential role in addressing this problem at the local level. They rely entirely on community donations and volunteers.

In a time where kindness and community connection are more important than ever, Helping Handzzz stands as a shining example of how small actions can lead to meaningful change. Daoud’s journey highlights the significance of giving back and the power of community support.
