Transforming Recovery: NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter Launches New Award-Winning Outpatient Rehabilitative Care Services

NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter is expanding its rehabilitative care services with new outpatient options

Carter recently received $110,000 in funding from Henry “Hank” J. Carter and Wheelchair Charities Inc. to enhance its rehabilitation unit. This funding will help provide top-notch therapeutic services in a community that greatly needs them.

Beginning soon, patients will have access to various rehabilitative services, including physical therapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy, and audiology. This expansion aims to accommodate over 13,000 rehab visits each year, greatly improving access and scheduling for patients. For now, referrals are accepted from facilities like NYC Health + Hospitals/Bellevue, Metropolitan, and Harlem, with plans for a system-wide launch later this year.

“This is a meaningful step for our community,” said Floyd R. Long, the CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Carter. “It expands access to trusted care and meets the needs of our patients.”

Rosario “Chay” Uy, Director of Rehabilitation, echoed this sentiment. He highlighted how this expansion helps bridge gaps between healthcare and community needs. “We are dedicated to offering high-quality, compassionate patient care,” he said.

The addition of outpatient services is set against a backdrop of a growing need for rehabilitation, especially following the COVID-19 pandemic. According to a recent survey by the American Physical Therapy Association, 84% of patients reported delays in receiving needed therapy during the pandemic. This initiative aims to address such delays and provide timely care to those in need.

Many users on social media have reacted positively, emphasizing how beneficial these services will be for local families. City leaders also see this as a vital resource for the community. New York State Senator Cordell Cleare and NYC Council Member Yusef Salaam have expressed their excitement, noting that locals will no longer have to travel far for high-quality rehabilitative care.

By investing in these services, Carter is not just expanding its footprint; it’s helping to create healthier, more resilient communities, providing important care for family members recovering from strokes or surgeries. Through compassionate support and state-of-the-art facilities, Carter aims to make a difference in the lives of many.
