Transforming Surplus into Supper: How Walmart and Open Hands Are Feeding Our Community

Melissa has dedicated over a decade to retail recovery at Open Hands. For her, this work is essential. “We get 95% of our food through this,” she explained. Thanks to a new truck, they can now access fresh food without the limits of refrigeration.

Before, Melissa relied on her minivan for pickups. “I’ll never forget the scent from a donation of papayas,” she recalled. “And there was one time I had so many turkey tenderloins that my van nearly scraped the ground!”

Jocelyn, another volunteer, highlighted how far they’ve come. “Melissa started in her basement with just boxes and her personal car. Now, we have this amazing truck!”

This truck is vital. The funding from Walmart has helped Open Hands meet the community’s needs. With over 34,000 people living in Pasadena, they distribute food to 250-275 neighbors four times a week, totaling around 5,000 people each month.

Melissa is a whirlwind of activity. She coordinates volunteers and plans efficient routes for pickups from Walmart and a few other retailers. Her volunteers, Missy and Bill H., join her on these important trips.

Having once been a stay-at-home mom, Melissa wanted more when her kids grew up. “I want to spend my time purposefully,” she said. Volunteer Missy echoed this sentiment. “I’ve learned a lot about food waste. Instead of tossing out perfectly good food, we collect and distribute it to those in need.”

This initiative highlights an important aspect of community support. According to a recent survey, over 60% of volunteers reported gaining valuable skills through their work, such as leadership and teamwork. In communities where food insecurity is prevalent, organizations like Open Hands make a real difference, not just in providing food but in fostering a spirit of cooperation.

As food waste becomes a bigger concern globally, local recovery efforts like these play a critical role. They not only help those in need but also promote sustainability. Melissa and her team are proof that with dedication and support, impactful change is possible.
