During the Munich Security Conference on February 14, Badr Abdelatty, Egypt’s Foreign Minister, met with Jessika Roswall, the European Commissioner responsible for Environment, Water, and Competitive Circular Economy. This meeting highlighted the growing ties between Egypt and the European Union within their Strategic and Comprehensive Partnership.
Abdelatty discussed how their collaboration has deepened in vital areas, especially in renewable energy and water resilience. These sectors are crucial for both Egypt and the EU.
He also talked about Egypt’s ambition to be a regional hub for the renewable energy market, mentioning new projects focused on producing green hydrogen and green ammonia. These projects reflect Egypt’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.
One significant outcome of the meeting was the recent “Joint Declaration on Water” signed between Egypt and the EU at the COP 28 climate conference. This agreement marks an important step toward enhancing long-term cooperation on water issues, especially in boosting water security through sustainable resource management.
Abdelatty emphasized Egypt’s goal of balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability. A key initiative is the launch of Egypt’s first market for carbon emission reduction certificates, which encourages businesses to decrease their carbon footprint. This aligns with the discussions on key outcomes from the recent COP 29 climate conference.
