Transforming the Capital: Join the Exciting Clean-Up Initiative!

The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change recently launched a significant clean-up campaign in Suva as part of Fiji’s preparations for World Environment Day and World Oceans Day. Early risers, including officers and volunteers, gathered before dawn to kick off the event.

Clean-up activities took place at five locations along the Suva foreshore and the Nukubuco Sandbank. More than 30 partners joined, such as Outrigger Fiji, Suva SUPers, and youth volunteers from the Pacific Ocean Litter Youth Project (POLYP). They worked hand in hand with the Uto Ni Yalo Trust, even conducting a traditional sail to the sandbank as part of their marine conservation efforts.

One organizer noted that volunteers sorted through the collected waste, providing a sobering glimpse into the extent of plastic pollution in local waters. This hands-on experience underscores the importance of awareness and education in the fight against pollution.

This year, the global themes are #EndingGlobalPlasticPollution for World Environment Day and #SustainingWhatSustainsUs for World Oceans Day. These days serve as vital reminders to protect our environment and oceans.

Recent statistics reveal that around 300 million tons of plastic are produced each year, with a significant portion ending up in oceans and waterways. According to a study by the United Nations, around 800 marine species are affected by marine debris, pointing to the urgent need for initiatives like this clean-up.
