The Tamil Nadu Forest Department has made a significant move to protect Chennai’s coastline by planting 20,000 mangrove seedlings across 20 hectares along the Buckingham Canal. This effort aims to bolster the coastal ecosystem and enhance climate resilience.
Supriya Sahu, the Additional Chief Secretary for the Environment, noted on social media that officials have set up a unique “fishbone” canal system to support the growth of mangroves. This system consists of eight main canals and a network of smaller canals that allow saline water to nourish the plants effectively.
The Chennai Forest Division led this plantation effort, with the support of ICICI Bank as part of their corporate social responsibility program. This initiative is part of a larger plan to create a green belt of mangrove species in the region. In 2024–25, the Forest Department planted around 12,500 seedlings from six different species, along with 2,500 other coastal plants, to enrich the ecosystem.
