We talked with Jukka about the mission of his organization and the exciting developments in Finland’s plant-based sector. He offered insights into market trends, challenges, and Finland’s achievements in oat innovation. We also explored how policy changes could spark growth and what opportunities await international businesses and investors in this vibrant market.
Can you explain what Plant Based Food Finland does?
Our main goal is to promote a healthier, more sustainable future by encouraging the use of plant-based foods. We work to influence policies and tackle market challenges head-on. This hands-on approach helps us create initiatives that improve market conditions for our members.
Although our association started at the end of 2023 with 17 members, we have quickly grown to over 33. Our members include major food manufacturers, retailers, restaurants, and experts in research and biotechnology. This diversity makes our voice stronger in policy discussions and fosters a supportive community.
What’s happening in the plant-based food market in Finland right now?
The plant-based food sector is bouncing back after facing challenges like inflation and the pandemic. Consumers are showing renewed interest in plant-based options, and we expect to see significant growth in both plant-based meats and dairy alternatives.
In late 2024, Finland introduced national nutrition guidelines that highlight the importance of plant-based options, especially pulses and beans. These guidelines will significantly impact food service providers, which can help introduce plant-based eating to more people, especially students and workers during their meals.
Finland is known for its oat-based innovations. How is the food and agricultural sector driving this innovation?
Finnish innovations are often based on local ingredients like oats, fava beans, and peas. This focus gives us an advantage in the global market for plant-based foods. Many markets are still developing, offering great export potential for our products.
Some regions, like Southwest Finland, are proactive in creating plant-based food supply chains. Local efforts set a standard for other farmers, showcasing that collaboration benefits everyone in the industry.
How do you see the plant-based sector evolving in the next five years? What changes are needed?
We want to create a fair environment for plant-based products alongside traditional foods. Our goal is to shift perceptions so that policymakers and the public recognize the business and health benefits of plant-based options.
A recent study indicated significant growth potential from plant proteins, oat-based products, and cellular agriculture in Finland. We hope to see this reflected in the government’s food strategy as it is being developed.
Looking to successful examples from other countries, like Denmark, we encourage the Finnish government to adopt a strategic approach. This includes incentivizing farmers to grow diverse protein crops for humans, supporting research and development, and encouraging diet shifts toward plant-based choices.
What opportunities are there for international businesses in Finland’s plant-based sector?
Finland’s food tech scene is impressive, with a strong focus on research and development that leads to innovative products. However, we face challenges in securing local funding. As a result, Finnish companies are actively looking for foreign investments to help them grow and scale their operations.
Plant Based Food Finland can assist international businesses and investors seeking to explore opportunities in this exciting market.
