The Griffin Museum of Science and Industry is getting a major facelift. Thanks to a $10 million grant from the Richard H. Driehaus Foundation, this historic museum will not only restore its beautiful South Portico but also make it more welcoming for everyone. Work starts in spring 2025 and aims to finish by 2027.
Visitors will soon enjoy access to the original south entrance from Jackson Park. The plans include exciting new features like a café and a terrace overlooking the picturesque Lagoon and the upcoming Obama Presidential Center, set to open in 2026.
Dr. Chevy Humphrey, President and CEO of Griffin MSI, expressed excitement about the project, saying, “This is a pivotal moment for the museum as we honor its past while moving forward. The Driehaus Foundation’s support helps us make this iconic space accessible and engaging for future visitors.”
The Griffin Museum, designed by Charles Atwood for the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, is the last standing structure from that event. These renovations will reconnect the museum with the local park and enrich the visitor experience.
Anne Lazar, Executive Director of the Driehaus Foundation, highlighted the project’s importance, stating, “We are proud to support these renovations. This is a unique opportunity to restore an important public space that needs rejuvenation.”
The upgrades will focus on accessibility. Plans include an elevator and other features to ensure everyone can enjoy what the museum has to offer.
David Vitale, Chairman of the Griffin MSI Board, added, “Restoring the South Portico is about preserving history and deepening community connections. We are immensely grateful to the Driehaus Foundation for making this happen.”
The museum will remain open during construction, with no plans to restrict access to the surrounding areas or the park.
