The Society for Planet and Prosperity (SPP) is joining forces with the Secondary Education Board (SEB) to host a two-day climate education event in Abuja. This exciting gathering will take place on March 3-4, 2026, and will involve teachers and students from 40 different schools.
The training will use the Climate Education Handbook, created by SPP with help from the University of Bristol. This resource will provide teachers with essential tools to teach climate literacy. The goal is to inspire students to become passionate advocates for the environment. The event will also focus on strengthening climate-related clubs in schools, ensuring students stay engaged and active in climate action.
SPP is a not-for-profit organization leading climate policy discussions in Nigeria. They see climate education as a key way to nurture long-term awareness and drive positive change among young people. Mr. Nnaemeka Oruh, a Senior Policy Analyst at SPP, stressed the importance of early engagement with climate issues.
“As climate change shapes our future, it’s crucial for young people to take the lead. Discussions need to happen not just among leaders, but in classrooms too,” he said. “Empowering students with knowledge is the first step towards solutions.”
The Climate Education Manual is designed to align with existing school curricula and provide teachers with the confidence to teach about climate science and sustainable living. By embedding climate education in schools, SPP aims to cultivate environmentally-conscious citizens who can contribute to Nigeria’s climate goals.
Recent research highlights the importance of climate education. A study by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) found that integrating climate education in schools can drastically increase students’ understanding of climate issues and motivate them to take action.
