The Iraqi Minister of Environment, Heh Lo Al-Askari, spoke out today about the urgent need to tackle pollution in the Tangro River. During a meeting with a delegation from the World Food Program in Sulaymaniyah, he emphasized that practical plans are essential to reduce the river’s environmental impact.
The Tangro River is crucial for agriculture in the region. Unfortunately, pollution has been a long-standing issue, harming both farming and local wildlife. Al-Askari explained that we need immediate action and cooperation among all stakeholders to effectively tackle this problem.
In his comments, the minister reflected on previous efforts, including a visit to the river last August. This visit was led by the former Minister of Environment, Nizar Amedi, and included experts who assessed the river’s challenges. During that visit, it was decided to create a roadmap focusing on a scientific evaluation of the river’s health and finding urgent, sustainable solutions.
Starting tomorrow, environmental teams will begin fieldwork. They will collect water and plant samples for analysis—this will help measure the level of pollution in the river.
Al-Askari also highlighted the need for better collaboration between government bodies and international organizations. Proper management of water resources and addressing pollution requires teamwork from everyone involved. He urged local communities to understand the importance of preserving their environment, as it directly impacts public health and agriculture.
The World Food Program expressed its readiness to support these national efforts by offering technical expertise and modern technologies. Together, they aim to enhance water quality in the region.
The meeting concluded with a commitment to establish joint committees that will monitor the implementation of recommendations. This cooperative effort is aimed at reducing pollution in the Tangro River, improving environmental conditions, and protecting natural resources for future generations.
