The plans for a new ballroom at the White House are now official. After years of talk, construction will begin this September, with an estimated cost of $200 million. This space will be about 90,000 square feet, allowing it to host up to 650 guests for events.
Karoline Leavitt, the White House press secretary, highlighted the ballroom’s potential: “It will be an exquisite addition, carefully crafted for future generations.” President Trump is financing the project himself, along with contributions from “patriot donors.”
Historically, the White House’s largest indoor venue, the East Room, can only accommodate around 200 guests. For larger state dinners, events have been held in elaborate outdoor tents, which Trump finds unsightly. His desire for a grand ballroom isn’t new; back in 2010, he even contacted David Axelrod, former adviser to President Obama, offering to build a ballroom then.
Despite past discussions, Axelrod didn’t think the project was necessary. “Tent never bothered me,” he said, expressing regret over not pursuing the idea further.
Trump sees this ballroom as a way to elevate the White House’s hosting capabilities. He has made it clear that no previous president has tackled this issue in such a way. “I could build a beautiful ballroom. No president knew how to build a ballroom,” he remarked, emphasizing his expertise in such constructions.
The design discussions have already included various parties, indicating a serious commitment to this vision. Over the years, Trump has aimed to leave his mark on the White House. He renovated the Oval Office, updated the Cabinet Room, and redesigned the Rose Garden, projects that reflect his personal style and vision.
