Transforming Traditions: Kazakh Villages Choose an Alcohol-Free Lifestyle for a Healthier Future

More and more villages in Kazakhstan are choosing to ban the sale of alcohol. This shift is coming from the ground up, showcasing a community effort to boost public health and safety.

Prosecutor General Berik Asylov shared this trend on social media, noting that these decisions are made by local people rather than imposed by authorities. He stated, “When citizens take responsibility, reality itself changes,” highlighting the power of community action.

One village in the Mangistau region made headlines with their video announcement about stopping alcohol sales. Similar bans are popping up in places like Akmola, Zhambyl, and Karaganda. While these changes are still emerging, Asylov has observed an increasing number of “dry” villages.

Local councils and elders often lead this movement, with support from law enforcement and local governments. Entrepreneurs have joined in, too. Many shops have voluntarily stopped selling alcohol based on community requests. Interestingly, businesses haven’t suffered; instead, residents are buying healthier food and product alternatives.

The effects of this movement are already visible. Asylov reports a decline in crime and domestic violence. More youth seem to be engaging in sports and living healthier lifestyles, steering away from alcohol.

Data backs up these claims. In early 2025, crime rates linked to alcohol dropped across the nation, thanks to these grassroots initiatives. In the Aktobe region, 33 villages have opted out of selling alcohol. The Turkestan region reported 61 similar villages. The village of Sunkar in Almaty has gone so far as to eliminate alcohol from all aspects of life, not just from stores.

Asylov believes these community-driven initiatives pave the way for a safer society. He emphasizes that trust, stability, and peace are paramount and serve as inspirations for positive change.

This trend mirrors a growing global awareness about the health impacts of alcohol. A recent report by the World Health Organization suggests that reducing alcohol availability can significantly lower rates of misuse. As communities prioritize healthier living, similar movements could gain momentum worldwide.
