The Tambaram railway station in Tamil Nadu is undergoing a significant makeover. Managed by the Chennai Division of Southern Railway, this project is part of the larger Amrit Bharat Station Scheme, with an investment of around Rs 24 crore.
Tambaram is not just another station; it’s Chennai’s third major terminal, handling around 1.67 lakh passengers daily. This includes commuters, long-distance travelers, and visitors from nearby states. Since its inception in 1931, after starting electric suburban services in 1928, it has become a central hub for Chennai’s suburban network.
As part of the redevelopment, a new 8-meter-wide Foot Over Bridge (FOB) is being built. This bridge will link the eastern and western sides of the station, allowing for easier movement across all 10 platforms. A railway official stated that the bridge aims to reduce congestion and improve passenger flow, especially during peak hours. Interestingly, the existing FOB will remain operational, complementing the new structure.
Additionally, the station will provide nine lifts and 10 escalators to enhance accessibility. New facilities include better road access, a designated parking area, and improved signage on platforms, all aimed at making the travel experience smoother.
The project faces challenges due to ongoing train operations. Workers are tasked with carrying out these upgrades without disrupting the busy train schedule. Strict safety measures and coordinated planning between departments are essential for a successful execution.
Recent statistics show that over 1,20,000 people rely on suburban trains daily in the Chennai area alone, highlighting the importance of this redevelopment. Experts in urban development emphasize that improving transportation hubs like Tambaram can greatly enhance city connectivity and commuter satisfaction.
Overall, the redevelopment of Tambaram railway station is not just about modernizing infrastructure. It’s a step toward creating a more efficient transport system, benefiting countless travelers in and around Chennai.
