Delhi-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor Update: On February 22, Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the Delhi-Ghaziabad-Meerut Namo Bharat Corridor. This 27-km stretch enhances connectivity in the National Capital Region (NCR). When the full 82.15-km corridor opens, it will be India’s first fully operational Regional Rapid Transit System (RRTS). This project promises to boost the local economy.
The National Capital Region Transport Corporation (NCRTC) describes the Namo Bharat as a new, high-speed commuter service that connects key areas in the NCR. It aims for reliable, high-frequency travel, unlike traditional rail services.
Right now, traveling from Delhi to Meerut by road takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. With the launch of the Namo Bharat train, this time could drop to under an hour. Designed for speeds up to 180 km/h, it allows smooth and quick regional travel, making daily commuting far easier.
The train’s seating features a 2×2 arrangement, with one premium coach offering more spacious seating. Commuters will find comfort while traveling.
- Enhanced Interchanges with Delhi Metro
The corridor will connect with four Delhi Metro stations. Currently, only a portion of the metro stretch is operational. The upcoming Sarai Kale Khan station will add a crucial interchange point.
- Integrated Ticketing System
Passengers can book QR code tickets via mobile apps for both the Namo Bharat and Delhi Metro. This integration simplifies travel across the region.
Security is a priority. Each Namo Bharat station has platform screen doors to protect commuters. One coach is reserved for women, and facilities like CCTV cameras and emergency systems are installed to ensure safety.
According to experts, such transit projects can significantly impact societal structures. A recent study found that improved public transport can lead to increased economic activities and better job access, especially for low-income groups.
