Indian Railways is making great strides in the production of Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches. These coaches focus on safety, comfort, and performance.
From April to November 2025, the Railways manufactured over 4,224 LHB coaches. This is an impressive 18% increase from 3,590 coaches produced during the same time last year. The Integral Coach Factory in Chennai led the way, producing 1,659 coaches. Raebareli’s Modern Coach Factory delivered 1,234, while the Rail Coach Factory in Kapurthala rolled out 1,331.
If we take a historical look, from 2014 to 2025, Indian Railways produced more than 42,600 LHB coaches. This marks a remarkable 18-fold increase compared to roughly 2,300 coaches built between 2004 and 2014.
Officials point out that this growth reflects Indian Railways’ commitment to upgrading passenger transport. LHB coaches are favored for their advanced safety features and lower maintenance needs.
Moreover, Indian Railways is aligned with the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and ‘Make in India’ campaigns, focusing on boosting local manufacturing and reducing reliance on imports. This approach supports the growing demand for safer and more comfortable travel options.
To put this in perspective, as of 2022, rail travel is one of the safest forms of transport, with a remarkably low accident rate. Studies show that modernized train systems can decrease travel times and enhance passenger satisfaction.
As Indian Railways continues its efforts, the aim is clear: to provide passengers with a smoother, safer, and more enjoyable journey.
