Transforming Undergraduate Admissions at OHIO: The Impact of CRM Reimplementation

Ohio University is revamping how future Bobcats become part of the campus community. This major overhaul of their Slate system started in January 2024 and aims to make the admissions process simpler and more intuitive for both students and staff.

Katie Troyer, who leads Enrollment Marketing and Operations, is at the helm of this initiative. Her experience with CRM systems makes her uniquely suited for this challenge. Candace J. Boeninger, Vice President for Enrollment Management, highlights that this is Troyer’s seventh deployment of such a system, showcasing her expertise.

The new approach focuses on students. According to Boeninger, it aims to create a data-driven, agile process for recruiting undergraduates across all Ohio University campuses, including online. Starting August 1, students applying for the Athens campus for spring, summer, or fall 2026 will encounter a revamped application process. This includes a personalized portal that offers real-time updates on their application status, digital admission letters, and next-step instructions.

Troyer emphasizes that students are at the core of this project. She remarks, “We’re making the admissions experience more intuitive and supportive. With real-time tools and easier navigation, students will feel confident moving from application to enrollment.”

Looking ahead, there will be further enhancements. Regional campuses and online offerings will see improvements, along with updates to communication processes and workflows for selective programs. For faculty and staff, the new system enables better data access, streamlined operations, and enhanced integration with other university systems, making their work easier and more efficient.

Since the initial implementation of Slate in 2016, both its features and the university’s enrollment strategies have significantly changed. This overhaul aligns the system more closely with current and future goals, reducing complexity and improving communication. A complete transition to the updated system is expected by February 2026.

As universities adapt to the needs of today’s students, these changes show a positive trend towards modernization in education. According to a 2023 survey by the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), 87% of students prefer seamless digital interactions during their college application journeys. This initiative at Ohio University reflects that belief, paving the way for a smoother transition into higher education.
