AI Management and Energy Savings for Smart Cities
SpaceTech is dedicated to sustainable building management across its vast portfolio. They combine property management skills with smart tech to be a leader in space management in China. As data from smart devices increases, SpaceTech sought a powerful edge AI server. One area where AI shines is waste management; it helps sort waste and alerts staff when bins are full.
However, managing older building systems can be tricky. These systems, which control lighting, air conditioning, and security, often don’t work well together. This lack of communication complicates management.
Switching to Arm-based Servers
To tackle the performance and efficiency challenge, SpaceTech teamed up with Ampere Computing. By moving from x86 edge servers to the Ampere Altra family of Arm-based servers, they expect major benefits: 2.5 times the performance per rack, 2.8 times less power use, and a significantly smaller size. This switch reflects a growing trend in the industry towards Arm processors for efficient cloud computing.
Tests comparing the Qwen-VL Vision Language Model on Ampere’s Arm servers versus x86 showed impressive energy savings without losing AI functionality. Arm offers special libraries that boost performance while keeping model size manageable. For instance, one method speeds up processing by 1.6 times compared to standard methods.
Key to success are video processing and AI analysis. The Arm-based Ampere solution handles video streams and AI models 2.6 times faster than the previous system. With Arm’s smart sensors, SpaceTech can automate building operations, enhancing sustainability. For example, occupancy sensors can turn off lights or HVAC systems when rooms are empty.
Arm Servers for Smart City Growth
Ampere’s Arm servers are set to be vital for SpaceTech’s smart city plans. They promise better energy efficiency and less cooling needed compared to traditional x86 systems.
Cameras, sensors, and various devices will soon rely on Arm processors for efficient AI workload management. SpaceTech is also integrating different building systems, like lighting and HVAC, into one unified system. This way, they can reduce energy consumption while simplifying operations.
Smart Urban Management with Edge Cloud Technology
To manage over a billion square meters of urban space, SpaceTech created an “Edge Cloud Native” platform. Here, each device works like a mini-cloud, enabling real-time AI decisions that lower costs and reduce environmental impact.
Working with Ampere Computing, SpaceTech plans to transition from outdated x86 systems to Arm-based edge servers. This change will enhance compute efficiency and maintainability while boosting AI functions without needing heavy GPU setups.
