The Trump administration recently announced plans to take control of Union Station in Washington, D.C. This is a busy transportation hub, not just for trains but also for buses and shopping. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy emphasized that this move isn’t a power grab; he believes the Department of Transportation (DOT) can manage the station better than Amtrak did.

Duffy said, “We think we can bring in more tenants and generate more revenue to invest in this beautiful building.” Union Station has faced challenges, especially during the pandemic when foot traffic decreased significantly.

Trump has sought to increase his influence in Washington since starting his second term. Earlier, he declared a crime emergency in D.C. and sent in National Guard troops. However, recent statistics from the Metropolitan Police Department show that violent crime in the city is at a 30-year low, casting doubt on the administration’s claims about crime rates.

Despite this, Trump continues to warn about crime in the capital. He cites his military deployment as a successful measure to reduce crime, mentioning that over a thousand arrests were made recently.

The administration’s control over Union Station could also tie into broader efforts to impact cultural institutions. Trump has made changes at the Kennedy Center and has started a review of the Smithsonian Institution, aiming to change the narratives presented in its exhibitions.

Union Station has significant historical value but has struggled over the years. Critics are calling for revitalization, especially for the mall area, which has fallen on hard times. Duffy linked Trump’s takeover of Union Station to an initiative to make the city cleaner and more attractive.

He stated that making Union Station a premier train station is part of a larger vision. “It’s been neglected for decades,” he remarked, pointing out the need for investments and modernization. Duffy even mentioned the possibility of high-speed rail, although funding for such projects has been inconsistent.

Union Station’s history with Amtrak is relatively new, having taken over in 2024 after a legal battle for control. Previously, the city received $82 million for improvements to the station, including modernization efforts.

Despite the political backdrop, local officials like Mayor Muriel Bowser express hope about the DOT’s plans. Bowser suggested that increased federal investment could significantly benefit the region, and she is optimistic about the future of the station.

As Union Station enters this new phase, it remains a critical point in Washington’s transportation and cultural landscape. The question now is how these changes will unfold and whether they will meet the community’s needs.
