WHEELING — Employees at The Health Plan in West Virginia recently demonstrated their commitment to health by participating in a local initiative called the “Mountaineer Mile.” This event took place in both their Wheeling and Charleston offices, inspired by Governor Patrick Morrisey’s campaign encouraging residents to walk more in state parks.
Jeff Knight, the CEO of The Health Plan, emphasized the significance of the event. “This is a fun way to bring our team together while promoting healthy living,” he said. Almost all employees participated, with 118 walking in Wheeling and around 40 in Charleston. A few staff members stayed behind to manage calls.
Knight hopes this walk will be the start of a regular activity. He’s considering allowing extended lunch breaks for those who wish to walk daily. “We want to elevate well-being and encourage everyone to go the extra mile,” he added.
The Mountaineer Mile idea struck Knight after he heard Morrisey speak recently about the importance of exercise. The governor’s initiative has made specific trails in state parks available for walking, but Knight saw a chance to adapt it for the city, hoping other businesses would join in.
For added context, a survey conducted by the National Institute of Health in 2023 found that only 23% of Americans meet the recommended guidelines for daily physical activity. Encouraging walking events like the Mountaineer Mile could play a critical role in changing those statistics.
Knight expressed his personal goals, too, saying he’s motivated to get back into a regular exercise routine. Events like the Mountaineer Mile not only promote fitness but also foster camaraderie among employees.
In today’s fast-paced world, initiatives encouraging movement are more critical than ever. As Knight pointed out, they can serve as a model for other workplaces looking to improve employee wellness. The Health Plan’s efforts could inspire similar programs across the state and beyond, showing that small changes can lead to significant health benefits.
