Eight Indian Seafarers Return Home After 50 Days in Detention
Mumbai: Eight Indian seafarers have finally returned to India after a harrowing experience in Iranian waters. Led by Captain Vijay Kumar, they spent 50 days detained by Iranian forces aboard the oil tanker MT Valiant Roar.
Their vessel was seized on December 8, 2025, near the port of Dibba. The crew was accused of oil smuggling, despite being outside Iranian territorial waters. “They arrested us on false claims. We were held without proof and interrogated. It felt like torture,” Kumar shared with ETV Bharat.
The situation grew dire as missile and drone attacks occurred nearby. The crew took shelter, desperately trying to contact Indian authorities for help. The Ministry of External Affairs and the Forward Seamen’s Union of India played crucial roles in their evacuation.
Kumar’s cousin, Vinod Panwar, also a captain, reached out to the Ministry, highlighting that their ship was no longer seaworthy due to damage. Even after their release, they were stranded.
As tensions soared in the region with U.S.-Israel airstrikes, the sailors faced life-threatening conditions. With flights grounded, they embarked on an exhausting 1,800-km journey by bus to safety, spending around $3,000 in total.
Third Officer Venkat Rao recalled the nightmare: “We traveled through bombed areas with barely any food or water.”
The psychological toll is evident. Rao admitted, “Even the sound of firecrackers frightens us now. After hearing real bombs, I won’t light a firecracker again, even for Diwali.”
