Four more miners trapped in a flooded cave in Laos have been rescued, but two remain missing. Divers worked tirelessly through narrow, flooded tunnels and sharp rocks to find them.
The rescue effort started with one miner being pulled to safety on Friday. The four others were found huddled on a rocky ledge inside the cave, about 300 meters from the entrance. Rescuers had to drain the cave’s water and navigate hazards to reach the group.
International diving teams, including those who rescued a Thai soccer team in 2018, are now searching for the last two miners. They are wading through muddy waters and dealing with poor visibility to locate them.
The miners entered the cave last week looking for valuable minerals like gold ore when they were caught by sudden flash flooding. This created a wall of sand and gravel, blocking their exit.
During the first rescue, the group was provided with water, soft food, and aluminum foil blankets to stay warm while waiting for help.
The first rescued miner was seen emerging covered in mud but in good spirits as rescuers cheered. His hands were injured, but he managed to maintain hope.
Social media exploded with reactions, celebrating each rescue. One rescuer expressed joy on Facebook, stating, “The first one is out. Safe and sound!!!”
Rescuers faced many challenges, like managing temperature changes, navigating tight spaces, and calming survivors’ anxiety. Thai rescuer Kengkaj Bongkawong emphasized the risks of navigating a narrow tunnel where turning around wasn’t possible.
Josh Richards, an Australian cave diver, mentioned the instability of the cave’s clay and mud walls. He described diving in waters so murky, it felt like “diving in coffee.”
As efforts continue, Bongkawong plans to explore deeper into the cave, but this area is heavily flooded, making it even more dangerous. The community remains hopeful, willing to share in every sign of progress.
