The Smithsonian Institution, which includes 21 museums and the National Zoo in Washington, D.C., is set to remain open until at least October 6, 2025. Currently, 62% of its funding comes from the federal government, which means that if the government shuts down, these places will have to close as well.
A zoo representative stated, “During a government shutdown, the Zoo and the rest of the Smithsonian museums must close to the public.” Thankfully, the animals will still receive full care during this time, but online cameras that let people watch the animals will not be running.
While this news is disappointing for visitors, outdoor attractions like the National Mall’s monuments will stay open. Other museums not dependent on federal funding, like the National Building Museum and the Phillips Collection, will continue to operate as normal.
Emergency services, including 911 dispatch and hospitals, will also function as usual, ensuring public safety remains a top priority. However, some national park services might be reduced, with fewer staff and closed visitor centers, although emergency personnel will still be present to ensure visitor safety.
Interestingly, during previous government shutdowns, similar patterns were observed. According to a study from the Pew Research Center, these shutdowns can affect public confidence in government. A recent survey indicated that about 54% of Americans express concerns over potential longer-term impacts on services and institutions.
In summary, while some cultural sites may close, essential services will remain intact. Continuing public access to outdoor attractions and privately funded museums offers some relief amidst uncertain government operations.
