FRISCO, Texas – Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs has successfully passed his physical and is off the physically unable to perform (PUP) list. He is now on the active roster.
Diggs faced a tough season last year with a knee injury that ended his campaign early. When training camp began in Oxnard, he was placed on the PUP list. Cowboys head coach Brian Schottenheimer shared that he anticipates Diggs making the final 53-man roster and possibly returning to practice this week.
“I’m really proud of how hard Trevon has been working,” Schottenheimer noted. “He’s been putting in the time with Britt [Brown]. His dedication is impressive.”
While passing his physical is encouraging, it doesn’t guarantee he’ll be ready for Week 1 against Philadelphia. However, it’s a promising sign that his return is within reach.
The Cowboys have struggled with injuries in their cornerback lineup over the past season, making Diggs’ return even more crucial. Notably, he had knee surgery only seven months ago, but now his progress is a bright spot for the team.
If Diggs is ready to go, it means he won’t be on injured reserve, which would have kept him out for at least four weeks. His potential return within this timeframe boosts the team’s confidence.
In Diggs’ absence, the Cowboys have been experimenting with different players at cornerback. Kaiir Elam has made a strong impression, potentially securing a starting position opposite DaRon Bland. Bland has also played in the slot, which could lead to Andrew Booth starting alongside Elam if the team needs more coverage until Diggs is fully back.
The addition of Diggs provides defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus with more strategic options. This preseason, the Cowboys’ defense showcased their skills, recording five interceptions over three games. Eberflus has emphasized the importance of turnovers, and Diggs, who has 20 career interceptions, can only enhance that effort.
Diggs’ return not only strengthens the Cowboys’ defense but also uplifts the team spirit. The focus now shifts to how soon he can contribute on the field, making fans hopeful for an impactful comeback.
