Buenos Aires – A trial began on Tuesday for seven healthcare workers accused of negligence in the death of soccer legend Diego Maradona. He passed away at the age of 60 following a cardiac arrest at a home near Buenos Aires on November 25, 2020.
Maradona was under the care of these professionals at the time of his death. The prosecution claims that they failed to provide adequate medical attention. Prosecutor Patricio Ferrari stated that Maradona was not mentally competent when he was moved to the house in Tigre, which led to a dangerous situation. He described the handling of Maradona’s care as reckless, saying that it was “a deliberate and cruel decision that led to his death.” Evidence presented included a photo of Maradona lying in bed shortly before he was found dead, demonstrating signs of neglect.
Family members were present in court, visibly emotional. Maradona’s daughters, Dalma and Giannina, sat with Verónica Ojeda, his former partner, while they awaited justice for their loved one.
The trial could extend for up to four months, with several hearings scheduled each week. The key figure in this case is neurosurgeon Leonardo Luque, Maradona’s personal physician for his last four years. He performed a crucial surgery on Maradona’s brain just weeks before his death. Other defendants include psychiatrist Agustina Cosachov, along with a psychologist, a medical coordinator, and nursing staff involved in his care.
Outside the courthouse, supporters of Maradona gathered, holding banners calling for justice for the soccer icon. Their presence underscores the public’s ongoing interest in Maradona’s case and the desire for accountability regarding his medical treatment.
