Matthew Rooney, grandson of the legendary Pittsburgh Steelers founder Art Rooney, passed away at 51 in his Hamptons home. The news was confirmed by the team, though details about the cause of his death haven’t been disclosed.

Born on November 11, 1973, in Meadowbrook, Pennsylvania, Matthew was the son of JoAnn and John J. Rooney. John was a minority shareholder of the Steelers until he sold his majority stake in 2009. Matthew graduated from NYU with a Bachelor of Arts and later earned a Master’s degree from Columbia University.

He was known for his artistic spirit and love for ballet and opera. His family described him as “one of life’s last true Dandies,” celebrated for his wit, charm, and fashion sense. “Matthew had a unique way of making people feel welcome and initiated,” noted fashion designer Joshua Kamei on Instagram.

Matthew had a deep connection to the arts. He served as vice chair of the New York City Ballet’s Allegro Circle and was part of the board of directors for the Metropolitan Opera. His contributions to these organizations reflect a commitment to cultural enrichment in New York City. Recent statistics show that donations to the arts have risen over 25% in NYC over the last five years, highlighting the growing importance of such figures in the community.

He divided his time between New York, Los Angeles, and settled in Brooklyn Heights and East Hampton. Matthew leaves behind his mother, four siblings, and many nieces and nephews, creating a lasting legacy of family and connection.

The Rooney family has been integral to the Steelers since Art Rooney established the team in 1933. Art Rooney served as chairman until his passing in 1988, followed by his son Dan, who held the presidency until 2002. The team is currently led by Art Rooney II, Matthew’s cousin, who embodies the family legacy in professional football.

A private funeral for Matthew will take place on August 21 in Philadelphia.
