Trinity Rodman’s future in the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) is under discussion as teams abroad show interest. The Washington Spirit wants to keep her, but current roster limits are complicating talks. At just 23, Rodman will be a free agent this offseason.
Rodman’s agent has been in touch with NWSL commissioner Jessica Berman to explore options for keeping her in the league. However, salaries overseas, particularly in the English Women’s Super League, are notably higher than what the Spirit can offer. The NWSL has a salary cap of $3.3 million per club, which will increase to $5.1 million by 2030. Meanwhile, there’s no salary cap for individual players in Europe, making those teams more enticing financially.
In 2021, Rodman made headlines after her rookie season. She signed a three-year deal worth $1.1 million, becoming the highest-paid player in the league at just 19. This season’s minimum salary is $48,500, rising to $82,500 by 2030, but that’s still a fraction of what she could earn abroad.
Rodman has expressed a desire to play internationally, reflecting a trend among U.S. players. Many have recently moved to Europe, citing higher wages as a significant draw. However, Spirit owner Michele Kang emphasizes the importance of keeping Rodman as a vital part of the team’s future and the league overall.
“Trinity is crucial for our success,” Kang stated back in March. Her commitment to the Spirit has been clear, but her options are expanding.
Rodman stood out during her time in the youth national team and has excelled with the senior national team, too. She has contributed significantly, scoring 11 goals in 47 appearances, and was a key player in the U.S. team’s gold medal victory at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Despite dealing with injuries this season, including a sprained MCL, Rodman has helped the Spirit secure a strong position in the NWSL standings. Her influence extends beyond the field; she was prominently featured in an Adidas campaign for the upcoming 2026 men’s World Cup, increasing her visibility in the sporting world.
As the season closes, Rodman remains focused. “Once we get this championship, then I can start making decisions about next year,” she said. The choice to stay or go will shape not just her career but also the landscape of women’s soccer in the U.S. for years to come.
