Last Thursday, the Ministers of Economy and Trade, Labor and Rehabilitation, and the Head of the Executive Team for the President’s Initiatives visited the Islamic Call Society’s commercial and entertainment complex in Tripoli. This project has been stalled since the 2011 revolution.
The government representatives emphasized the importance of opening this project on schedule. They highlighted the Prime Minister’s directive to ensure the project meets quality standards with the right materials and equipment. However, no specific timeline for completion was provided.
Located in the Gurji area of Tripoli, the complex is spread over more than 6 hectares. It will feature administrative offices, commercial banks, medical clinics, event halls, cafes, and restaurants.
This incomplete project is a reflection of the many stalled developments across Libya since 2011. While the exterior looks finished, much work remains inside. The halt of construction and the departure of foreign contractors have left many projects unfinished.
The Tripoli government views this complex as a key part of their development strategy. They aim to boost economic activity and provide essential services. The officials stressed the need for quicker progress to ensure readiness, but they didn’t outline specific actions to achieve this.
It’s worth noting that this isn’t the first time the government has claimed that an important project needs completion, yet we have seen little progress. The challenge remains to turn these words into tangible results.
