Disney has announced that Tron: Ares has generated $4.8 million in previews. This includes early shows that kicked off Wednesday and Thursday afternoon.
If Tron: Ares meets its projections and opens above $40 million, it would be a win. Currently, the fall box office is just a bit ahead of last year, totaling around $674 million. However, it’s not thriving, especially with big titles like Dwayne Johnson’s The Smashing Machine and Margot Robbie’s A Big Bold Beautiful Journey facing challenges at the box office. Plus, this weekend, Tron: Ares will compete with both MLB playoffs and NFL games. On the bright side, it has an 86% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, which is a step up from the 64% for Tron: Legacy back in 2010.
Previews for Tron: Ares are already higher than those for Tron: Legacy, which earned $3.6 million in its previews during a time when midnight showings were the norm. It’s also in line with significant reboots from last year, like Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes which had $6.6 million, and Alien: Romulus with $6.5 million. Advance ticket sales for Ares stood at $7 million, similar to Alien: Romulus, which opened at $42 million.
Directed by Joachim Rønning, Tron: Ares aims to captivate audiences with its mix of action and nostalgia. The film, carrying a hefty production cost of $180 million, is co-produced by Jared Leto, who also stars in it.
In other box office happenings, Roofman, a romantic comedy featuring Channing Tatum and Kirsten Dunst, took in $1 million from 2,800 theaters. It launched its showings at 7 p.m., earning decent ratings from audiences. Critics have rated it at 82% on Rotten Tomatoes, and projections suggest it could reach around $10 million over its opening weekend.
Sony/Affirm’s Soul on Fire has made $575,000 from its early viewings, receiving an A CinemaScore and a 5-star PostTrak rating. The film follows the journey of a boy who leans on his faith and family after a serious accident, showcasing the power of community support.
Here’s a quick look at the top five films of the week:
- Taylor Swift: Showgirl – $34M (Week 1)
- One Battle After Another – $16.2M (Week 2)
- Smashing Machine – $7.7M (Week 1)
- Gabby’s Dollhouse – $6.6M (Week 2)
- Conjuring Last Rites – $5.76M (Week 5)
Overall, the cinema landscape is competitive right now. With so many movies vying for attention, the success of each film really depends on how they engage audiences and handle the competition. As we look ahead, it will be exciting to see how Tron: Ares performs in this crowded marketplace.
