Microsoft recently acknowledged a glitch with its May 2026 security update. Some users might see a message saying, “Something didn’t go as planned. Undoing changes.” This issue arises from the EFI System Partition (ESP), which is crucial for booting up the device. If the ESP has less than 10 MB of free space, the update could fail and display a 0x800f0922 error code.
According to Microsoft, the installation usually gets to about 35-36% before running into trouble during the reboot phase. Despite this hiccup, the update is important. It includes fixes for critical security flaws in Microsoft products, even though there haven’t been reports of active attacks.
For those encountering this problem, Microsoft has suggested two potential solutions: a registry edit, which can be complex, or a Known Issue Rollback (KIR). The company claims this fix has already been applied to consumer devices and non-managed business setups.
This issue affects Windows 11 versions 25H2 and 24H2 and is particularly surprising since Microsoft had recently been enjoying a period without major problems. Ironically, this comes just after a blog post titled “Improving Windows Quality.”
