NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – Troy’s men’s basketball team faced a tough loss against CSUN on Sunday night, falling 94-85. The game highlighted their struggles on the boards, where they trailed by a significant 17 rebounds.
Despite the defeat, four Troy players scored in double digits. Cobi Campbell stood out with a career-high 18 points, shooting impressively from the field. He made 62.5% of his shots and 66% from beyond the arc. CSUN, on the other hand, had a strong offensive performance, hitting 56.7% of their shots and scoring 60 points in the paint. Joshu O’Garro led CSUN with a double-double of 23 points and 11 rebounds.
The game started with both teams exchanging baskets, with Troy briefly taking a 14-12 lead five minutes in. Thomas Dowd contributed a quick two three-pointers, finishing the first half as the top scorer with 12 points. However, CSUN took control with a significant scoring run, pushing their lead to 29-20.
Troy fought back and closed the gap, but CSUN maintained their lead going into halftime, with both O’Garro and Josiah Davis scoring ten points each.
In the second half, Troy regained the lead early on with a Valdes three-pointer. The game remained tight, featuring several lead changes. Troy briefly led again when Dowd scored, but CSUN quickly countered. A late surge, punctuated by crucial baskets from O’Garro and Davis, helped CSUN secure the win.
Coach Scott Cross noted, “We did well offensively, but our rebounding cost us. Getting outrebounded by 17 is tough. We need to toughen up for the next game.”
Interestingly, Troy scored 85 points, marking their highest total in a regulation loss since a 2015 game against South Alabama. They also shot 86.4% from the free-throw line, showing improvement in that area over their last few games.
Next, Troy will head to San Diego to face San Diego State on Tuesday night, a matchup that could test their adjustments after this challenging game.
