Jack Hawkins Jr., the chancellor of Troy University and a Vietnam War veteran, has been named the 2025 Patriot of the Year by the Mobile Bay Area Veterans Commission. This recognition highlights his long-standing commitment to service and leadership.
Dr. Hawkins, a Mobile native, served as a U.S. Marine Corps officer during the Vietnam War. He earned several awards for his bravery, including the Bronze Star and the Purple Heart. After his military service, he transitioned into education, obtaining bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Montevallo, followed by a doctorate from the University of Alabama.
In 1989, Dr. Hawkins became Troy’s chancellor. Today, he holds the title of the longest-serving chief executive at a public university in the U.S. Under his guidance, Troy University has gained recognition as one of the most military-friendly campuses in the country.
Recently, when Military Tuition Assistance was halted during a government shutdown, Dr. Hawkins acted quickly.
