CARLSBAD, Calif. – Brantley Scott made a notable leap in the NCAA Men’s Golf Championship, climbing 21 spots to tie for 18th place after shooting 1-under on Saturday. This impressive performance led the Troy Trojans during the second round, held at the Omni La Costa Resort & Spa North Course.
Despite Scott’s success, Troy faced challenges as a team. After starting the tournament with a 4-over round, the Trojans struggled again, finishing at 20-over in the second round. This dropped them from a tie for 12th to tie for 24th place with Tennessee, leaving them 12 shots behind teams like Vanderbilt and Wake Forest, who are just ahead in the standings.
Entering the final round, Troy has a chance to bounce back as they aim to make the cut for Monday’s competition. They will tee off at 2:45 p.m. CT alongside UNLV and UCLA, hoping to close the 14-shot gap.
In contrast, No. 5 Arizona State showcased their skills by carding an outstanding 11-under 277, securing the top spot on the leaderboard. They’re followed closely by Oklahoma and Auburn, among others.
Brantley Scott had a mixed day. He started strong with birdies on the fourth and sixth holes but struggled near the midway point, facing bogeys on the ninth, tenth, and twelfth holes. However, he ended his round positively with a birdie on the 18th. Earlier that day, he was recognized on the PING All-Southeast Region team, a proud moment for him and Troy.
Other Troy players had varied performances. Jake Springer managed to finish strong with two birdies in his last four holes, ending with a score of 77. Lee Poppell, Nick Fowlkes, and Pablo Gracia turned in scores of 79, 81, and 83, respectively.
