Troy University is shaking things up with exciting changes. They’re launching a new College of Science and Engineering and an innovative degree in electrical and electronics engineering. This new college will take the place of the old College of Arts and Sciences, focusing purely on STEM fields. This means students can dive deep into areas like biological sciences, chemistry, computer science, and more.
Chancellor Dr. Jack Hawkins, Jr. emphasizes how crucial this shift is. He points out that STEM jobs are growing twice as fast as those in other fields. “We need to prepare our students with relevant skills,” he said. This push for science and research shows that Troy University is committed to leading in education and meeting the demands of the job market.
As part of this reorganization, some programs are moving to different colleges. For example, subjects like history and philosophy will now be part of the newly named College of Arts and Humanities. The College of Education will expand its name to include Behavioral Sciences after taking on departments like sociology and political science.
Dr. Kerry Palmer, Senior Vice Chancellor of Academic Affairs, explained this realignment. “We aim to meet the needs of our students and the world,” he stated, highlighting the importance of providing focused support for each academic discipline.
The Alabama Commission on Higher Education has recently approved the Bachelor of Science in Electrical and Electronics Engineering (BSEEE). This program promises a mix of theory and practical learning, preparing students for real-world challenges. Dr. Govind Menon, the new dean, expressed that this program aligns with Troy’s goals to become a recognized research institution.
One interesting fact: as of 2023, jobs in STEM fields make up nearly 25% of all positions in the U.S., according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. This growth trend shows why universities like Troy are prioritizing STEM education.
The new engineering program is set to kick off this fall, complete with internships and capstone courses to give students hands-on experience. With these developments, Troy University is not just changing its structure; it’s also shaping the future for its students and the community.
