The Justice Department has decided to stop fighting President Donald Trump’s executive orders that targeted certain law firms. This comes after several federal judges ruled that these orders violated the Constitution.
The firms affected included Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, Susman Godfrey, and Jenner & Block. They faced consequences like losing security clearances and government contracts because of their clientele. These firms stood firm against Trump’s orders, unlike many others in the legal field who backed down.
Perkins Coie has worked with prominent Democrats, including Hillary Clinton. WilmerHale was connected to Robert Mueller, who investigated Trump. Jenner & Block had Andrew Weissmann, also part of the Mueller team, on board.
A representative from WilmerHale expressed relief. They stated, “Our challenge against the Executive Order was about defending our clients’ rights and the rule of law. We’re glad these principles were honored.”
Jenner & Block echoed these sentiments, saying the administration’s decision confirmed that the lawsuits against them were unconstitutional.
The Wall Street Journal first reported on the Justice Department dropping the defense of these orders. Federal judges had supported the firms, with U.S. District Judge Beryl Howell describing the executive order involving Perkins Coie as an “unprecedented attack” on the legal system.
Interestingly, some other law firms, like Paul Weiss, opted to make deals with Trump’s administration. They promised to provide financial support for causes he favored and to remove diversity initiatives, which sparked criticism within the legal community.
Vanita Gupta, a former high-ranking official at the Justice Department under Biden, criticized those firms that complied, saying they undermined both the legal profession and the rule of law. She highlighted a crucial divide: between those who stayed ethical and those who compromised their values.
Rep. Jamie Raskin, a Democrat from Maryland, praised the firms that resisted Trump’s orders. He noted that they forced Trump to withdraw his unconstitutional attempts to punish people for their beliefs.
