The Trump administration recently dismissed two federal prosecutors in Virginia who disagreed with the criminal case against New York Attorney General Letitia James. Kristin Bird and Elizabeth Yusi were let go from their roles at the Norfolk office where James’ case is being pursued.
Yusi had been with the Eastern District since 2010, while Bird joined in 2019 and was deputy chief of the Narcotics and Violent Crime Unit. Both lawyers have since moved to the private sector. This firing follows the exit of Erik Siebert, the former interim U.S. attorney, who also didn’t take action against James or former FBI Director James Comey.
The Justice Department has not commented on these changes, but it’s clear that there’s been significant turnover in the office. Michael Ben’Ary, the national security official, also lost his position. He claims this was due to criticism from far-right social media personality Laura Loomer, which the Justice Department hasn’t addressed either.
Adding to the chaos, First Assistant U.S. Attorney Maggie Cleary stepped down shortly after she was named to her position. She initially took over after Siebert’s departure, but before long, Lindsey Halligan, a former White House aide, was installed as the interim U.S. attorney. Less than a week after starting, Halligan filed charges against Comey for allegedly lying to Congress.
As for James, she is set to appear in court soon, but it’s uncertain who will represent the Justice Department given the recent firings. Halligan secured James’ indictment from a grand jury, but he has yet to show up in the Norfolk federal court.
James’ defense attorney, Abbe Lowell, has brought in Andrew Bosse, a former assistant U.S. attorney based in Norfolk, as local counsel for the arraignment and upcoming proceedings.
