Trump and Netanyahu’s Ultimatum to Hamas: Embrace the Gaza Peace Plan or Suffer the Consequences

Donald Trump and Benjamin Netanyahu, the Israeli Prime Minister, recently outlined a 20-point peace plan for Gaza. During their meeting at the White House, they emphasized the importance of the proposal, stating that Hamas must accept it—or else.

After the meeting, statements indicated that Hamas had not yet received the plan, leaving their position unclear. A Hamas official confirmed they were unaware of the details. However, Qatari and Egyptian mediators met with Hamas to discuss the proposal later that evening.

Both leaders made it clear they would not accept a rejection from Hamas. Trump stated that if Hamas declines their offer, Israel has the full backing of the U.S. to finish dismantling the threat posed by the militant group. Netanyahu echoed this, warning that Israel would act decisively if Hamas opposes the proposal.

The 20-point plan includes a ceasefire, a hostage exchange, and a phased withdrawal of Israeli forces from Palestinian territories. It aims for Hamas to disarm and to establish a transitional government overseen by an international body. If accepted, the plan promises to release all remaining hostages within 72 hours.

The proposal also suggests a new governing board led by Trump, with support from Tony Blair. This has raised concerns about sidelining Palestinian leaders in future governance discussions. Critics warn that previous attempts at peace in Gaza have failed, often due to a lack of consensus among key parties involved.

In recent years, the situation has escalated, with Israeli attacks claiming over 65,000 lives since the fighting intensified on October 7, 2023. Civilians make up the majority of casualties. As the conflict continues, opinion remains divided. Some praise efforts for peace, while others, including officials from Hamas and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, view the plan as a potential trigger for further violence.

Recent statistics from various organizations highlight that any peace effort must address deep-rooted grievances from both sides. The pressure is on for Hamas and Israeli authorities to work toward a sustainable solution.

While Trump and Netanyahu assert that the pursuit of peace is worth the effort, the true challenge lies in gaining cooperation from all stakeholders to ensure lasting stability in the region.
