Recently, President Donald Trump announced a three-day ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. He suggested this could mark a turning point in their ongoing conflict. Both President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine and Yuri Ushakov, an adviser to Russian President Vladimir Putin, confirmed the agreement.
Trump, speaking before leaving the White House, said, “I asked, and President Putin agreed. President Zelenskyy agreed—both readily.” The ceasefire is set for May 9th to 11th, coinciding with Russia’s Victory Day, a significant national holiday.
This ceasefire includes a pause in all military activities and an exchange of 1,000 prisoners from each side. However, previous ceasefires have fallen apart quickly, with both sides blaming one another for ongoing violence.
While some experts remain skeptical about the ceasefire, claiming past negotiations haven’t led to substantial progress, Zelenskyy expressed hope that the exchange of prisoners could help pave the way for future talks. He emphasized the importance of returning Ukrainian prisoners home, stating, “Red Square matters less to us than the lives of Ukrainian prisoners of war.”
The U.S. has played a role in facilitating these discussions, according to Zelenskyy. He thanked the American team for their diplomatic efforts. Still, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio cautioned that negotiations remain stagnant and expressed concern about the lack of fruitful outcomes so far.
