Matt Van Epps has secured the Republican nomination for Tennessee’s 7th Congressional District. This follows his endorsement from former President Donald Trump, which set him apart from a crowded field of candidates.
In total, Van Epps went up against ten other Republicans in the primary. All candidates emphasized their support for Trump, but Van Epps stood out by securing notable endorsements from figures like former Rep. Mark Green and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee. With a history of solid Republican votes in the district, Trump won over 60% in the last election.
The 7th District is diverse, ranging from affluent areas to pockets of poverty, including parts of Nashville and an Army base. With this backdrop, Van Epps advances to the special general election scheduled for December 2, a date that might see lower voter turnout.
On the Democratic side, State Rep. Aftyn Behn won her primary in a tight race. Her district, which encompasses downtown Nashville and is considered a liberal stronghold, poses challenges for Republicans.
Behn’s strategy is aimed at young voters. Many of them, aged under 45, live in the district but often have lower participation during off-cycle elections. She has also committed to expanding representation for Black constituents if elected, promising to hire a full-time organizer focused on this demographic.
Van Epps, a lieutenant colonel in the Tennessee Army National Guard, is campaigning on themes of security and infrastructure. He has ambitious plans, like enhancing broadband access and investment in innovative energy solutions, such as small nuclear reactors.
Interestingly, Van Epps’s military background resonates with many voters, particularly in a district that values defense and security. His previous active duty experience could be a decisive factor as the election approaches. According to a recent survey, military experience often plays a crucial role in voters’ preferences, especially in districts with significant military presence.
As the candidates prepare for the December election, the dynamics between their platforms could shape the future of this crucial seat.
