Notable incidents include threats against politicians like Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer and attacks on others, such as the incident involving former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi.

The contents of Jones’s messages indicated he was upset with Gilbert over comments about a deceased Democratic delegate. In a rant, he compared Gilbert to notorious dictators like Adolf Hitler and Pol Pot, saying, “Three people, two bullets. Gilbert gets two bullets to the head.” After sending the texts, he admitted to Coyner that they were sent in error.

In response to the backlash, Jones stated he regretted the messages. He acknowledged that “violent rhetoric has no place in our politics,” while also criticizing Miyares for spreading what he called “smears.”

Jones’s fellow Democrats have also condemned the comments. Gubernatorial candidate Abigail Spanberger said she expressed her disgust to Jones and emphasized the need for accountability given the escalating tone in political discourse.
