On Thursday, President Trump highlighted an opportunity presented by the ongoing government shutdown, hinting at plans to reduce federal agencies he views as politically motivated. His comments came shortly after his administration froze nearly $18 billion earmarked for infrastructure in New York City and canceled about $8 billion for climate-related projects in historically Democratic states.

Russell Vought, head of the White House’s Office of Management and Budget, initially announced these funding cuts. Trump stated he would soon confer with Vought to identify which agencies to target for cuts. He described many as “political scams” and expressed surprise at the chance he believes Democrats have inadvertently given him.

When asked about the potential firings, Trump suggested that cuts could target projects Democrats favor. Normally, past government shutdowns have led to furloughs for federal workers, who typically receive backpay upon resuming their jobs.

As for specific plans, Vice President JD Vance indicated that final decisions on staffing during the shutdown haven’t been made yet. He expressed that extraordinary measures might be necessary the longer the shutdown persists.

According to a Pew Research study, public sentiments about government shutdowns appear to be shifting, with more Americans opposing them and favoring compromises.
